The World Economic Forum has unveiled its annual list of the Top 10 Emerging Technologies, highlighting innovations that are moving from research labs into real-world deployment and have the potential to reshape industries, economies, and everyday life.

Presented during the Forum’s Summer Davos event in Dalian, China, the 2026 report focuses on technologies that are approaching a critical tipping point where decisions by governments, businesses, and researchers could significantly influence their future impact.

According to the report, this year’s technologies share three major trends: personalization, decentralization, and greater efficiency. Many are designed to deliver more value with fewer resources while bringing services closer to where they are needed.

1. Everything-to-Grid Energy

As renewable energy adoption grows, managing electricity demand has become increasingly challenging.

Everything-to-grid technology allows distributed energy assets such as electric vehicles, home batteries, factories, and data centers to feed stored electricity back into the power grid during peak demand periods.

This approach can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-powered backup plants and improve grid stability. In California, distributed energy networks have already demonstrated the ability to deliver significant amounts of electricity during periods of high demand.

2. Direct Lithium Extraction

Lithium remains one of the most important materials for battery production and the global energy transition.

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) offers a faster and potentially more sustainable alternative to traditional extraction methods, reducing processing times from years to hours while lowering water consumption.

The technology can also extract lithium from geothermal fluids, industrial wastewater, and recycled materials, helping diversify global supply chains.

3. Passive Radiative Cooling Materials

With global temperatures rising, reducing energy consumption for cooling has become a major priority.

Passive radiative cooling materials can reflect up to 95% of sunlight, lowering surface temperatures without using electricity. Applied as coatings, paints, or building materials, these solutions can significantly reduce cooling costs and energy demand.

Several countries have already incorporated cooling technologies into green building standards.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are among the most persistent environmental pollutants.
